The other morning, I was sitting at my kitchen table, sipping a to-die-for Purity coffee, watching the squirrels play and the birds bathe in the feeder. Pure bliss.
And then—WHAM!
Outta nowhere, a Cooper’s hawk snatched a blue jay midair. My jaw dropped as I watched a plume of feathers settle.
Yeah, this is spring for me. Sure, I love the flowers, baby animals, and sunshine, but vicious things sneak up on you if you’re not paying attention.
In Chinese medicine, spring belongs to the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. And the liver? It’s the Tasmanian Devil. A pent-up ball of potential waiting for the right moment to explode. Spring aggravates Taz—the wind, the heat, the floating pollens… Ka-Boom!
Whether your pet struggles with anxiety, liver dysfunction, metabolic disease, or allergies—spring makes everything go BOOM.
This is why you need to be wildly prepared.
Now’s the time to adjust food, herbs, and protocols—before symptoms take over. Even if your pet is doing fine right now, don’t wait until you’re playing catch-up. Spring doesn’t wait. Neither should you.
Now, remember the holistic medicine mantra—the gut is the center of the health universe. If the gut is strong, the rest of the body follows. If it’s weak? Well… let’s just say chaos ensues.
That’s why fortifying the gut with a Gut Reconditioning Protocol (GRP) and feeding foods that support function rather than drain it is the foundation of everything. A strong gut = a stronger pet.
There are so many food choices that make the liver happy. And the liver? She’s like Mama—if she ain't happy, nobody’s happy.
Why does this matter? Because the right nutrients in the right format feed function. They help the body reveal the most important issues so you can treat the core problem—not just chase symptoms in a never-ending game of Whack-a-Mole.
There’s method to my madness. If you want a straight trajectory to healing instead of the long, frustrating scenic route? Start with food. It simplifies the entire process and reduces the time to response dramatically.
If you want to help your pet thrive through spring, you need to keep the liver happy—because when the liver is cranky, everything goes downhill. Here’s how to give it some love:
1. By all that is holy, avoid kibble. I cannot stress this enough. If you do one thing, make it this. Kibble is dry, processed, and inflammatory—the liver hates it.
2. Feed moisture-rich, whole foods. Fresh, moisture-rich food fuels the liver—save air-dried and freeze-dried foods for toppers.
3. Add liver-loving veggies to every meal. Celery and kale should be staples in your veggie mash, as they drain heat and upregulate liver function. Want to supercharge it? Start adding tiny amounts of broccoli sprouts and gradually increase them with each batch—these upregulate detox pathways like nothing else.
4. Consider a liver detox. The Whole Dog Purification (WDP) is the gold standard. Not ready for the big guns? Canine Hepatic Support or Livaplex are solid backup options—they’re not as complete, but they’ll help.
5. Use freeze-dried organs as functional food.
✔ FD Liver: Strengthens a sluggish liver.
✔ FD Lung: Helps sedate a peeved liver when things are spinning out of control.
6. Grow your own broccoli sprouts. Fresh is always better, and sprouting kits like Hamama make it ridiculously easy. (I have two containers growing right now!)
7. Get in for a seasonal wellness check. If you want to stay ahead of disease, now’s the time to check in—before symptoms spiral.
Spring doesn’t come in quietly. It sneaks up like a Cooper’s hawk in full dive mode, and if you’re not ready, you’ll be picking up the feathers later.
Now’s the time to prepare, adjust, and act. Not when the allergies hit. Not when the symptoms flare. Now.
Because when the hawk swoops, you need a full arsenal to meet it head-on.
